Sydney Turf Club

Passing of former Club Chairman, Jim Fleming

Date: 3/12/2007 -

Sydney Turf Club is saddened by the passing of its former Chairman, Mr Jim Fleming, on Saturday 1 December.

Jim joined the Board of STC in September 1978 and was later elected Chairman of the club in 1983, a position he served until 1990.

Jim’s devotion to the Club and the racing industry was evident in his role as a Director of the Club for more than two decades. His contribution was fittingly honoured with the naming of the JR Fleming grandstand at Rosehill Gardens.

Jim was instrumental in lifting the prestige of the Golden Slipper Stakes, giving it a profile in Sydney to rival that of the Melbourne Cup.

He has left wonderful vision and a legacy that will carry on at Sydney Turf Club.

Jim will be sorely missed by his many colleagues and friends in the industry and the Club would like to extend its thoughts and condolences to Jim’s family and friends.

A funeral service for Jim will be held on Monday, 10 December at 10.30am at St Andrews Cathedral, cnr George & Bathurst St, Sydney.
