WIN bet requires your horse to finish FIRST in a race. A PLACE bet requires your horse to finish FIRST SECOND OR THIRD. (NB: When there are only five, six or seven horses in a race, PLACE betting pays a dividend for FIRST or SECOND only. The exception to this rule is where a race that originally had eight horses is reduced to seven as a result of a "late" scratching. In this case, PLACE dividends will still be paid for FIRST, SECOND and THIRD. There is no place betting when a race has less than five horses.
An EACH-WAY bet is a combination of a WIN and PLACE bet. If your horse finishes FIRST you collect both the WIN and PLACE dividends. If your horse finishes SECOND or THIRD you still collect the PLACE dividend.
